The birth of a shining example of democracy in Botswana

The basic aim of a democratic regime is to curb the use of arbitrary powers-especially of government and economic institutions-against its citizens- (West, 2001).

Since the achievement of the so-called independence in Africa, a lot of African states have gone through fragile and at times very nasty "democratic experiences."

Authoritarianism appears to have been favoured compared to the nurturing of democratic institutions whose aim is to address the needs of the poor masses. In some cases, military juntas and pseudo-democratic practices have taken the platform at the expense of true democratic practices. In a nutshell, Africa has experienced and continues to experience painful lessons of horrible democratic dispensations.
