Sibanda Is At It Again

Temba Sibanda is at it again, disparaging the journalism fraternity in Botswana. But this time he has absolutely lost it.

He claims to be an infallible journalist-turned-public relations-practitioner and his authority to such claims is that he has been to a journalism school. No wonder he writes such misguided diatribes because he has only been exposed to one part of the media.

It is clear from his writings that his language is devoid of legal concepts and jargons intrinsic with media laws. He must have been so fascinated with perfecting his skills so to conform to the five Ws and an H that he so much disregarded the broad spectrum of issues inherent in the media. Going through a journalism school does not make one a good journalist. The people that Temba is denigrating are the wheels of the profession in Botswana and we owe the success of the media in this country to them. I wonder what it is that Temba is trying to achieve with his desperate and systematic deluge of accusations to journalists and his outbursts. But he must stop disgracing himself and the journalism profession. How can someone who purports to be a journalist of calibre proclaim to embrace such a Media Bill with open arms! Is Temba aware of its implications to our democratic ideals and media freedom? In any case who said journalists don't have a code of ethics and what makes him think that the moderator of the Btv's Zimbabwe: Voice From Within programme ignored the basic principles of objectivity and impartiality? Who should be in the dock here, MDC's Morgan Tsvangirai or ZANU- PF's Robert Mugabe? If the MDC supporter and Btv anchor happened to be thinking alike and grilling those who rule by violence, what's wrong with it?Mind you, there is nothing like objectivity in this world because whatever you think is an objective comment informed by certain dynamics and discursive meta-narratives as well as biases. You can only attempt to be objective, but the background from which you come from will always expose you. There is no single truth in this world but your truth and my truth. So what makes Temba to think that his truth is the absolute truth? What makes him think that government, which is led by politicians with vested interests, is the right judge to choose who should be a journalist and who should not? What makes him think government is the repository of truth and justice? Btv or any other media in Botswana might have their own flaws, but the situation is not so desperate as to call for curtailment of Batswana's freedom of expression.
