SADC-EU regional response to HIV/AIDS

The impact of the HIV and AIDS pandemic on the SADC region is well known to all of us. The gravity of the situation cannot be overstated, nor can it be stated too often.

The SADC member states are home to almost 40percent of the world's total number of people living with HIV; eight SADC countries have adult prevalence rates of over 15percent; over 3,000 SADC citizens die from AIDS-related causes every day. There is a rapidly growing population of orphans and vulnerable children, requiring increasing care and support.

The impact varies from country to country and the need for prevention and the burden of treatment falls largely on national governments, but each one, whether with high prevalence or lower rates, can learn from the others.
