SADC chairperson's statement on Kenya

As Chairperson of SADC, I wish to express concern over the violence that has erupted in Kenya following the announcement of the official results of the Presidential and General elections held on 27 December, 2007.

The killing of innocent Kenyans especially in the aftermath of what has been considered to have been peaceful and incident free polling can only be described as unfortunate and regrettable.

As Chairperson of SADC, I wish to note that Kenya has over the years not only been an oasis of peace in the troubled Horn of Africa, but has also been a peace broker and promoter in conflicts such as that afflicting Somalia as well as other parts of the continent. It is in this regard that one expected Kenya's elections to reflect this leadership.
