Response to Mmegi

This Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs has noted the concerns raised in an article entitled "Open Letter to the Minister of Labour and Home Affairs" by Modiri Mompoloki Modisaotsile, which appeared in your newspaper (10/07.08, Page 10).

This Ministry therefore wishes to make the following response stating some facts, in response to the concerns raised by Modiri Mompoloki Modisaotsile and for the benefit of your readers. The allegations contained in the article are against Cash Bazaar Holdings.

1) With regard to employees being made to stand upright for eight hours or more everyday and not being allowed to sit down even if there are no customers to serve and the issue of targets, we wish to point out that the labour law does not address some specific details of how employees can go on with their daily work, but it is expected that employers and employees should agree on acceptable conditions, whether they are not acceptable or the implications of accepting them are not clear to one party, the Department of Labour and Social Security may be contacted for advice. Employees in particular are always advised and encouraged to negotiate better terms of employment with their employers.
