Remembering Seretse

It has been ages since TITUS MBUYA wrote Sir Seretse Khama. This Christmas, the last one before Festus Mogae leaves office, the last one before Lieutenant General Seretse Khama Ian Khama assumes office, Mbuya remembers to write a letter to the late.

It is now official. Mogae is definitely going. I was not going to say anything until I was sure that he was going. Last month he told Parliament, in the State of the Nation address, that he is stepping down in March. When he made the announcement the people were ecstatic. The MPs gave him a standing ovation and everybody in the gallery was clapping their hands. As you can imagine, up to the point that he made the announcement, I was anxious wishing that he does not say he wants a third term because these new African presidents like third terms. I mean, during your time there were no term limits. And it was nice.

It is just a matter of time before the heir to the throne assumes his rightful place. We have started the count down. In less than 100 days, Kgosi Lieutenant General Seretse Khama Ian Khama will become the president of the Republic of Botswana. The people cannot wait. In Serowe your people are falling over each other pledging beasts, goats and chickens that are going to be slaughtered at the kgotla on the day he takes over. It is going to be a big day.
