Public statement on the 2009 general elections

1. The Botswana Federations of Trade Unions (BFTU) takes this time to encourage all trade union members and the entire Botswana workforce to go and vote in the 2009 Local Government and Parliamentary Elections to be held.

It is our civic responsibility as workers to partake in the democratic process, not only as a means to protect and advance our interests, but also to continue the legacy of our liberal democracy.

We implore workers that as they cast their vote, they should think about their working conditions now and into the future and the livelihoods of their families and relatives. They should ask themselves whether and how their quest for decent working conditions, the ever-present threats of joblessness, insufficient labour rights, inadequate pay due to lack of social dialogue and a weak social security system could be addressed through the ballot.
