Possession Of Omang By Cash Loans Contributes to Voter Apathy

I have observed over the years as voter apathy has been increasing and I wondered what could be the problem.

There are a number of factors leading to factors, which contribute to voter apathy such as lack of trust on politicians, lack of information about voting or how important it is for one to cast their vote. Recently Cash loan outlets have affected the number of voters, as Omang identity cards are used as security when desperate clients are in need of cash and this leads to significant number of Batswana not taking part in the General Elections. Apart from elections, the Omang card is essential tool for our daily lives; most critical is when someone is sick and Omang is also needed at banks, post offices, and at times at road-blocks. Botswana laws prohibit anyone from keeping an ID that does not belong to them and it's a serious offence that one can be fined. The government should act now before it is too late. It is high time that this cash loans are regulated and some clauses abolished including that of keeping I.D cards as security.

I strongly feel this should be given utmost attention since about eighty percent of Batswana live on credit, this means a very significant number of potential voters will fall victim of the practice.
