New Year message to the nation from the NGO movement

We have been ushered into 2009 and it is proper to reflect on the challenges and opportunities our country faced in 2008. Botswana Council of Non-Governmental Organisations (BOCONGO) applauds Batswana and the NGO Sector for their hard work and contribution towards the development of their country and region in the year 2008.

2008 will be remembered as a year in which Botswana continued to be a shining example of democracy through the smooth transition of Presidential power. As a peace loving nation, we need to create space within the national spirit of Mmualebe to dialogue among ourselves to address various concerns raised about this form of governance.

BOCONGO further notes that the year 2008 will also be remembered as a year in which the NGO movement survived the challenge of donor fatigue and flight, due to Botswana's seemingly good growth in GDP. This has led to a good number of international donor organisations taking Botswana out of their priority lists.
