New brooms in the Cabinet

Most people seem to agree that during the recent Government reshuffle, HE the President did a useful job in shaking up his top brass, reallocating responsibilities and generally spring-cleaning the Cabinet cupboards.

We earnestly hope that this new Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture will prove a success, even if it is bound to cost the average Motswana taxpayer more of his hard-won Pula. Well, we must all make concessions for our young people and their entertainment, especially in the lamentable absence of Tirelo Sechaba.

One Ministry re-posting which should make some fur and feathers fly, is that of the valuble Rre Mfa to Agriculture, where he is bound to make his volcanic presence felt.  We just hope that there is no truth in the rumour that he is already moving to abolish such cattle breeds as Hereford and Holstein, since they are actually not indigenous to Botswana, and thereby are eating grass which should be the preserve of our own Tswana breeds.  There is concern also that maize and potato-growing might be banned, since these crops originate from America and should not take up ground meant for "native" mabele and dinawa.   On the same lines, it will be pity if such friendly and helpful trees as jacaranda, blougom and peperi have to be expelled, to make way for local moselesele, mongana and moloto. We can only hope that the Hon. Assistant Minister will temper his tremendous zeal for localisation with tolerance and sweet reason.
