Moupo, cronies sabotaged opposition talks and it's pay back time

I listened to the Radio Botswana popular morning show Masa- A- Sele on Monday morning. People were commenting on the just ended weekend by-elections where the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) swept everything.

It is my hope that the leadership of the main opposition, Botswana National Front (BNF) was listening too. Many people put the blame for the embarrassing opposition loss on the BNF, after it sabotaged the opposition talks, which were aimed at poolling both human and financial resources together in an effort to unseat the BDP.

I did not have the opportunity to comment on the radio; therefore I want to give my view. It is agreed that the BNF was indeed the main loser over the weekend after losing Kgalagadi North constituency and Marulamantsi ward which they previously held. There are a number of factors that have contributed to their heaviest loss ever. One; The voting public is punishing the BNF for the gross transgression they committed when they arrogantly walked out of the opposition unity talks, ignoring public interest. Immediately after the 2004 general elections, unity talks were resumed, and hopes went high as all opposition parties, with only the exception of MELS, were involved. People saw this as an opportune time to unseat the stubborn domkrag. Hopes were raised even further when the BNF president, Otsweletse Moupo was brought to parliament through a combined opposition force. It was hoped that after the initiative of joint opposition force against the BDP proved to be viable, nothing will deter the negotiating partners to go all the way and take over power from the BDP.
