Media freedoms and the enemy within

Of recent, a number of commentators have expressed the view that President Khama's intended law suit against Botswana Sunday Standard if carried through poses a threat to our democracy and media freedoms in this country.

It is ironic that in reading through these muddled views on the subject, one gets a sense again that this is more about vilifying the President.

There is no discussion or attempt to distinguish between "fearless" and "malicious" reporting and to situate the President's  reaction in that space. Contrary to the claim by our experts, the very essence of the constitution consists in the right of every person to claim protection of the law when he/she has been unfairly injured. This right extends to the President as well.
