Legalising Prostitution Will Not Reduce HIV Infection

Please allow me to air my views regarding the matter of legalising prostitution as a means to curb the spread of HIV. On Friday in a Masa-a-sele programme, Dr Gobopamang Letamo said that he supported the legalisation of prostitution as a measure to curb the spread of HIV.

His reasoning is that prostitutes or sex workers as some people want to call them, are a high-risk group and legalising prostitution would enable us as a nation to reach them for assistance and control of the disease. He used Thailand as an example of a country where prostitution was legalised and researches suggesting that HIV transmission was not as widespread as it apparently is the case in Botswana. He went on to say that one woman in Botswana told them (researchers I presume) that she had two children and she was ready to have unprotected sex with her customers provided they paid more--as little as P50-00. The lady said that she was prepared to take the risk of HIV infection because if she got infected she would live for about 10 years by then her children would be grown up and she would have provided for them.

Sebetlela Sebetlela in Palapye called later on to support the view. He said that prostitutes should be allocated spaces where they would be found by the likes of him whenever they wanted their services.
