Is Botswana Ready For Citizen Journalism?

We (Botswana) are yet to establish community radio stations and newspapers but many of us have not accepted or are still sceptical about the role the media plays in communities they serve.

Besides, not many understand the role the media plays in a democratic society.
Journalists are still regarded with scepticism. They are not a trusted lot. But while Botswana is still grappling with these issues a new phenomenon is taking root elsewhere - that of citizen journalism. CNN call theirs i-reporters. There is also the mobile journalist or "Mo Jo" in short. Botswana being part of the global village cannot claim that it will not be affected by this new development. Sooner or later it will be.

The new phenomenon has been precipitated by constant advancement in technology and the overriding desire for free flow of information hence the way media content is crafted is also changing. In essence this change has further precipitated a power shift in that journalists are no longer the only credible source of news that is to be believed because of exclusive access to certain information.
