In support of military coup in Zimbabwe

One of the functions of elections in a democracy is to change government. Elections however have their own shortcomings. The unpopular government can rig them and claim to have won. There can be no change of government if elections are not free and fair therefore. In Zimbabwe, the ruling ZANU-PF does not only use violence and cheating to win elections, it wins them even before the election day. Out of 150 seats in the legislature, only 120 are contested in elections.

The remaining 30 are appointed by the president, thus ZANU-PF goes into elections leading by 30 seats already, how can it lose? While a lot has been said about the political and economic problems in Zimbabwe, no one has come up with a solution aimed at removing the evil and failed Robert Mugabe regime from power except to call for new elections. Why do we expect change of government to result from elections when the elections as we know are fake? I suggest that a military coup to remove Mugabe from office will not be a bad idea considering that elections will never do that. Considering that the top command in the military  are ZANU-PF cronies, these coup has to be led by the junior officers. It has happened in other African countries like Libya. Rather than serve government, the junior officers must defend their country from barbaric neopatrimonial rule of Robert Mugabe. They must stop being stupid when they are mature people. First they must refuse to beat and crash the demonstrators who are basically their parents, relatives and friends. Since a military coup is a unconstitutional way of changing government, I argue here that it is justified by the manipulation and subsequent failure of the constitutional mechanism to effect the long overdue change of government in Zimbabwe, the country that was far much better under colonialism than under Robert Mugabe who has deprived the poor not only of their freedom but social services and jobs that the colonial governments provided including his education and his health. After this guardian coup, the junior command should in collaboration with ZANU-PF moderates, leading opposition members and civil society form a transitional government that must organise free and fair multi-party elections in six months through assistance of the international community. After the elections, they must quickly return to the barracks.

They would have defended their country. One thing for sure is that African Union, NEPAD and so on will condemn the coup, which as I argue yes is bad and unconstitutional but necessary today in Zimbabwe. This condemnation will expose AU and NEPAD, they did nothing when Zimbabwe burnt and indeed supported Mugabe. Then when the patriotic junior staff decide to defend their country against government, these bogus organisations condemn them. They did that in Mauritania. What did they do to help the oppressed except to fall in love with Mugabe? It is true that a small conservative faction within the military will try to defend Mugabe leading to a civil war which will only be brief. Of course this will propel even more Zimbabwean refugees into Botswana and South Africa, but is that not what is happening already? Others like Thabo Mbeki will make the issue intellectual, talking about the unconstitutionality of the change of government by the military. The fallacy with these thinkers is that although, yes, military government is outdated, one way or another Mugabe is a civilian dictator, the only thing he does not have is military uniform thus there is no difference between his current government and military governments else where in African history.
