I was misrepresented - Mamela

I write to correct distortions in a story, which appeared in your Mmegi 19 June 2007 with a heading "BCP appeals for support".

The story says that in my response to accusations by the BNF that the B.C.P. copied their social democratic programme (SDP), I said, "They think SDP is their property. The core values of democracy are found in the SDP and the BNF is crazy to claim that it is theirs". The impression I get from the above phrase is out of context of what I said in my address of that rally. What I said was that social democracy as a philosophy the Botswana Congress Party subscribes to, was not invented by the BNF.

It is a philosophy that has existed long before the BNF came into existence. I even mentioned the Scandinavian countries as one place of the world where this political thought was embraced. For that reason, I said they cannot claim to own the philosophy or hold copyright for it. The issue was not about ownership of the BNF social democratic programme (SDP). Why would I dispute that it is their pamphlet anywhere? The second distortion was on the issue of privatisation. The writer again quotes me having said, "at the BCP, we are not against privatisation, but we are against wholesale privatisation which even includes privatisation of local butcheries, what do the locals benefit." This one baffles me most.
