President Ian Khama's State of the Nation address was certainly well received by many across the country and it's a pity that the issue of Halaal had to be tackled at this forum - as in reality it should not really be a concern that warrants a response from the highest office in the land.

Given that the media thrives on sensationalism it did not surprise most people either that certain sections of the press chose to cover the halaal story on the front pages of their publications. Controversy sells - and who better to exploit this than the media.

The issue of halaal has totally been blown out of proportion and in many ways the facts have been ignored and misconstrued. For example - It is a fallacy to propagate the idea that halaal is imposed on the general public and is a prerequisite for entry into the "lucrative" meat industry.
