Government does not violate HIV positive rights

In your Wednesday the 30th July edition, on page three, you carried a news item headlined: "Law Must Deal with Prisons' Sex - BONELA"

It is not NACA's intention to contradict any person's viewpoint or opinion with regards to the HIV and AIDS situation in Botswana. However, given our clear mandate of overseeing the national response to the epidemic, we get concerned when facts are distorted to push a particular agenda and thus mislead the general public about real issues around HIV and AIDS.

Related to the cited news story, we must disabuse the public of the distortion that "[the] Government is against HIV positive women having children, even though the couple might want a child." This is false. Government has never and will never infringe upon the rights of individuals to procreate, whether HIV positive or negative! However, there is no right that goes without a corresponding responsibility.
