Football leaders must discuss and vote wisely

The Botswana Football Association (BFA) goes to its convention this weekend to review the last two years, discuss the future and elect part of the leadership.

One hopes that when the BFA leadership meets in Gaborone, they will make a detailed review of how football has progressed since 2006 and come up with resolutions that will take us forward. Some of the issues must include: progress made in youth development and professionalisation of football; the performance of the National Executive Committee (NEC) on key responsibilities as detailed in the Constitution; the performance of the BFA Council and regional football associations (RFAs) given their mandate; efforts made to mobilise resources and sponsorships across football needs; whether or not the value of the that football product has grown and how football has been linked to all other efforts in the economy.

In my view, significant progress has been made in most of these areas although some need closer scrutiny. Such areas include evaluating whether the retired players committee as stipulated in the Constitution has functioned; ascertaining whether the technical committee has been functional under the leadership of Ezekiel Mooki and Sexton Kowa, and whether the regions have given feedback to membership at regions on key documents, which we are told were developed by the BFA NEC and shared at various Council meetings.
