End state media monopoly

The Botswana National Front (BNF) feels vindicated by the recent decision of the National Broadcasting Board (NBB).

This is a welcome development, particularly at a time when the state institutions seem to be resolute in undermining other players in society. The NBB decision comes after Mogomotsi Kaboyamodimo last month read a Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) statement over both Radio Botswana and Btv on the suspension of the party's Secretary General, Gomolemo Motswaledi.

In a recently issued statement, Kaboyamodimo tries to seek refuge in the Public Service Act to justify his action saying that as a civil servant he can not defy instructions from Office of the President alleging that he was instructed to read the statement by Office of the President. It has to be noted that Kaboyamodimo is a civil servant and therefore is not permitted by the Public Service Act to speak on behalf of any political party. On the basis of the above, then  Kaboyamodimo was acting beyond his mandate. The Office of the President abused its authourity by instructing him to read the BDP statement.
