EFA By 2015: What Are The Challenges?

The previous issues considered the 2008 'Education For All (EFA) Global Monitoring Report' and highlighted commendable progress achieved so far in improving the education system in Botswana.

Drawing from the report and other previous ones, this issue considers challenges Botswana still faces before the country can achieve the established goals by 2015. The challenges include areas where the goals may not be attained by the targeted dates unless effort is made to achieve them.

The grey areas reflected in the report for Botswana include the financial costs to households, achieving adult literacy, high child mortality rate and gender parity in education. Each of these challenges is explored in detail below.
The 2008 report indicates that "one major remaining impediment to access to primary schools and other facilities providing opportunities for basic learning is the financial cost to households" (page 112).
