Development journalism and good governance

Development journalism implies, above all, nation-building: Creation of national consciousness and unity; Encouragement of co-operation and peaceful co-existence between diverse and sometimes hostile communities.

In Botswana this is all the more important if we consider 'botho' as one of the core values that drive the country.   As per Vision 2016 "botho' defines a process for earning respect by first giving it, and to gain empowerment by empowering others. It encourages people to applaud rather than resent those who succeed. It disapproves of anti-social, disgraceful, inhuman and criminal behaviour, and encourages social justice for all".  Government believes that the media contributes to national development goals, foster political stability, promote national integration and educate.

"Development journalism" took to the fore in the 1960s and is similar to investigative reporting, but it focuses on the development agenda and ways to improve them. Further, it can be a powerful tool for local education and empowerment.  This type of development journalism also looks at proposed government projects to improve conditions in the country, and analyzes whether or not they will be effective.  Ultimately, the journalist may come up with proposed solutions and actions in the piece, suggesting ways in which they might be implemented.  Often, this type of development journalism encourages a cooperative effort between citizens of the nation and the outside world.  It is mainly the analysis of government projects and whether they (projects) will be successful that could lead to conflict. This is more so when we interpret analysis as the 'examination and evaluation of the relevant information to select the best course of action from among various alternatives'. Since we are individually different, we will always differ on the best course of action and this will at times lead to conflict. To avoid some element of bias however, journalists need to adhere to their ethical code or code of practice.
