CKGR is our home

Between Thursday 10 and Saturday 12 January, councillors from the Ghanzi district council enjoyed a two-day trip through the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR).

How wonderful for the council to pay for its councillors to visit and enjoy the reserve. It is a shame they will not pay for the Bushmen to enjoy the reserve as well.

We, who are from the CKGR, have won the right to live on our land. But we cannot afford to return to it. When the government evicted us, they used big trucks to transport us through long distances to the resettlement camps. Now that we can go home again, where are the trucks to take us? The council is happy to pay for councillors, who are not from the CKGR, to visit it. How wonderful it would be if the council would pay what is needed to allow us to return to our homes in the reserve. The CKGR is our home. But Ghanzi council will not tell us the reasons for their trip into the reserve last week. There doesn't seem to be any reason. If there was a reason for the councillors to go into the CKGR, using council money, we would expect them to make this reason public. As they will not tell us why they went to the reserve, perhaps it was just a holiday. We know that the government thinks the CKGR is a game reserve where only tourists should visit. So why else would the Ghanzi councillors visit the reserve? It is strange that the council spends money on a mystery trip that seems to have no purpose. But they will not spend money to help us go home, to undo a mistake that the court has said was illegal.
