Chronicle of a death foretold

Sometimes the truth hurts. The recent Mayoral and Council Chairmanship elections across the length and breadth of the country have seen the BNF lose control of Councils in many of its traditional strongholds including Kgatleng District Council and Lobatse Town Council. It comes hardly 3 (three) months after BNF declared that they could go it alone in the next general elections. This statement followed the total collapse of opposition talks.

By going it alone BNF rejected the possible incarnation as the explicit partner of the BCP and any other opposition party.  These results (mayoral and council chairmanship) come amid the much talked about party caucus meetings deciding on the elections of public officers.  Over the last few years, there has been increasing concern (amongst opposition parties and some BDP Councilors) that BDP was stalling participatory democracy in determining Mayoral and Council Chairmanship elections.  Critics maintain that this has weakened not only democracy as a whole but also tangible policy implementation as Councilors use these positions to fight sectarian wars.  This trend contains serious dangers that need to be recognized sooner rather than later and raises fresh questions about the role and responsibility of political parties in a system of participatory democracy.

With particular focus on the Gaborone City Council Mayoral elections party caucus meeting electing a public officer before hand, or more appropriately, its defiance is a tough call to the BNF Central Committee.  The BNF imploded at the recent GCC Mayoral elections; the pain must have been tangible, but the writing was on the wall.
