Capital punishment is a serious matter

The question as to whether a person guilty of murder should be hanged or not is a serious matter involving the decision to deprive a human being of the right to life.

As such, the subject should be treated with the seriousness it deserves. It is not a matter that should be treated as simply a topic of debate designed to entertain listeners to a T.V programme as to who in a debate is smarter than the other in discussing the merits or demerits of capital punishment. I use the word 'punishment' because a death sentence is not simply intended to deter potential murderers from committing the same offence but to punish the wrongdoer. The Bible says the wages of sin is death and murder is a capital sin.

I do not think the presenter of the Sunday Btv programme 'Matlho-a-Phage' on 20 April 2008 really appreciated how important a subject the death penalty is. I am not even persuaded that the presenter's main objective was to sensitise Batswana and/or sound their feeling on this important subject. Life has become so cheap in this country that our young people do not hesitate to end one another's life if, for whatever reason, the relationship between them breaks down, when this happens it is nonchalantly dismissed as Passion Killing and life goes on.
