Campaign for Burmese leader's release

As readers may be aware, today (19th June) is the 62nd birthday of Aung Sang Suu Kyi, the pro-democracy activist and elected leader of Burma. A Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and winner of the only truly democratic election held in Burma, she has been held under house arrest by the military dictatorship that control Burma for 12 years.

I believe that those of us that supported the fight against oppression during apartheid in South Africa and who believe in the principles of liberal democracy should heed the words of Nelson Mandela when he accepted his Nobel Peace Prize:
"We appeal to those who govern Burma that they release our fellow Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi, and engage her and those she represents in serious dialogue, for the benefit of all the people of Burma".
I urge all Mmegi readers to campaign for her release and for democracy in Burma.
