Call it xenophobia if you want

I write this letter as a concerned citizen. I am very concerned about the alarming number of incidents of Zimbabwean nationals perpetrating crimes against citizens in this country. It is no longer news that Zimbabweans kill, rape, assault and steal from Batswana. I was very sad to read about a woman, a Debswana employee, who was murdered last week when she got a puncture in the middle of nowhere. But of course, this is not the first incident and definitely not the last.

I am sure many of us still remember the cruel killing of Mr Patel, the late Indian businessman. Then there was the Zimbabwean man who went on a raping spree only a few weeks back. These incidents are just a drop in the ocean of atrocities committed by Zimbabwean nationals in our country. For ages now, Zimbabweans have committed all sorts of crimes against citizens of this country at will. These are the crimes that have saddened us, enraged us and instilled fear in us. We all know how the majority of people feel . What still remains to be known is what our leaders think. Honestly, I am so sick and tired of them hiding behind the xenophobia and diplomacy ! What is xenophobia exactly? Because this word is thrown around so much it has lost meaning. Our leaders avoid taking responsibility because of this word. Our politicians will discuss anything but the Zimbabwean perpetrated terrors. They avoid it like a plague. All because they want to keep the peace and wouldn't want to be accused of the magic word-xenophobia.

We see our leaders posing for the cameras with Zimbabwean leaders, talking about the years when they supported each other during the years of struggle. They will discuss their undying friendship and anything else. Anything, but the fact that Zimbabweans terrorize us. There is something wrong with this picture.
