Bye, bye democracy! Welcome dictatorship

Six months ago, I tried to challenge those in the know to shed some light on what the Khama presidency will bring for our country. None was forthcoming.

To me it is further proof that the great man is indeed a closed book. In the absence of input from those close to him we can only speculate based on the bits and pieces from what we manage to gather and on what we know of persons of his molds - populist per excellence.

As we speak, Khama is already putting together a team that will be part of his government. Influenced by his military background, his will be based on total loyalty and nothing else. As such, Members of Parliament with a military background stand a better chance of being in cabinet. Their numbers are expected to increase after the 2009 elections if the BDP wins elections. Merit will be a thing of the past. Senior public servants loyal to Mogae will be shown the door and a new set of bureaucrats will be brought in.
