BTV Sign Language Interpreting -A Disaster

We are humbly appealing to your department to listen to our voice with concern, simply involving NGOs which claim to speak for us will not solve anything unless we are involved.

We are appealing to specialists through your department in deaf education because they are employed by BTV department to do interpreting, which is not what we want, so please stop confusing! Influencing the deaf people on issues that you know are not right for them, by not telling them the truth or even threatening those who speak out. Please let us (The Deaf) make and decide what is best for us; we know what we want therefore we can make our voice heard only with your help.

We have demanded for our recognition and Botswana sign language, which regretfully is not making effect on the development of sign Language in Botswana. It is not even promoted. It is in this regard that the development of sign language interpreting on Botswana Television should play a major role. Because of the unfairness, confusion and violation of our rights to information, the majority of deaf people in the country have been marginalised and sign language interpreting has never been developed. In situations where sign language interpreting does take place it is usually done by people with no training. The result of this is that the majority of deaf people have had inadequate access to services such as medical, legal, welfare, education and other services that the government and private sector provide. The current deaf people's needs, problems and challenges should be discussed by involving us (the deaf) because as long as we are not included the outcome will be nothing to us without us; This should include recommendations.
