Botswana tax laws not in line with privitisation policy

Botswanas tax laws and revenue systems are not compatible with those of free market economies. The overriding objective for privitisation should be to facilitate free movement of goods, free movement of persons and free movement of capital. In short, privitisation is about freedom.

The basis of any freedom rests on a comprehensive legal framework geared towards protecting workers from unfair labour practices and protecting citizens from unfair tax systems.  Freedom would therefore entail fair labour laws, fair immigration laws and fair tax laws. In this article will restrict my argument to the need for Botswana government to introduce fair tax laws and fair revenue systems and the need to review Botswanas international aspects of tax laws to make them compatible with free market economy.

First of all, it has to be appreciated that democracy comes with rights and obligations, both on the side of the state and civil society. Every democratically elected government has the right to demand taxes from its citizen, but at the same time the state also has an obligation to ensure that tax revenue collected from citizens is used efficiently and for the benefit of the public at large. At the same token civil society has the right to hold the government and parliament accountable to them to ensure transparency and accountability on the use of tax payers money. The civil society or the voters should be concerned when taxpayers money is used to enrich the pockets of few individuals in our society. Greed should not have place in our society and the nation should jealously guard against a growing tendency to misuse public funds.
