Botswana not ready for direct presidential elections

It has been argued and in my view now a tired argument that Botswana should move towards direct election of the President.

In my view there are problems that must be addressed first before we decide to change our current system.

If we elect the president directly we may find that we are killing party politics. In our current system it is quite clear that the President is a member of the Botswana Democratic Party because he is elected by the" Party congress in the year of elections and consequently becomes the President of the country in the event the Party wins. Clearly when Batswana vote BDP MPs they know that they are electing the BDP President. If you do it otherwise where he wins primaries and then goes on to be elected by the nation, the moment he wins elections the Party becomes subdued to the extent that we may have a President who does not look up to any Party for recourse. He will therefore become a guest player in the Party. I think people should be allowed to be partisan, it is unfair for Magama to now want to be an MP only under a directly elected BDP President just to justify why he would not support Otsweletse Moupo.
