BNF statement on Mothei's suspension

Following the fateful Gaborone mayoral elections, the Executive Committee of the party met and discussed a report from the Gaborone City councillors.

After the discussions, the President, bestowed on him by section 19 (3) of the party constitution, instructed as follows;

1. That Comrades Leano Matseka, Malema Phaladi, Segakisa Phoi and Harry Mothei be charged with the following count;

a) disobeying a decision of lawful authority by standing against a BNF candidate agreed upon by the party caucus and disregarding an instruction from the Secretary General to vote for that candidate. By so doing the comrade contravened Section 4.1 of the party Code of Discipline.

2. That Comrade Harry Mothei be charged with engaging in an action that had a likelihood of tarnishing the image of the party by justifying his misconduct in the media. This runs contrary to Section 4.9 of the BNF Constitution.

3. That Comrade Mothei be suspended with immediate effect pending the outcome of the disciplinary hearing.

4. That the Disciplinary Committee should hold a hearing within 21 days
It should be noted that Section 2.3 of the Constitution makes it very clear that the BNF shall operate on democratic principles in all its structures and the minority shall be bound by the decisions of the majority. Cde Nelson Ramaotwana and Cde Ezekiel Dube were decided upon as candidates for the post of mayor and deputy mayor in the Gaborone City Council elections. The Gaborone City Council caucus, which made this decision was acting on the basis of delegated authority from the leadership.
