BLLAWU is barking up the wrong tree

In 2002, members of the Botswana Unified Local Government Service Association (BULGSA) went on a massive strike to demand the implementation of the Job Evaluation Exercise for the Councils and Land Boards as directed by a High Court order four years earlier.

Thousands of workers put down their tools in a strike that shook the nation and reminded government and other employers that, as a collective, workers were a force to be taken seriously.

More importantly, the strike brought the workers together and gave them an opportunity to feel the power of their solidarity; the subsequent victory earned BULGSA pride and respect. The Association had broken out of its 'toothless' existence and had emerged as a true defender of workers' rights. It gained confidence of employees of Local Authorities and its membership grew in number and strength
