Beware of 'South African Tourist Police'

My fiancee and I would like to thank your paper for the warning posted in your paper a few months ago. I am not sure of the exact day of publication, but the article was a warning about bogus "Tourist Police" targeting vehicles with foreign number plates in South Africa.

We both read the article at the time and commented on it. During the past 5 weeks we were staying in Johannesburg and did a lot of travelling between the East Rand (near the airport) and the North of Jhb.

On one particular day, a gold C class Mercedes pulled along side of us on the highway and hooted to attract our attention. The passenger then flashed an 'official' looking badge at us and motioned us to pullover.
