Beware of De Beers' motives

I am a regular visitor to your great country because I have a special connection with it. Having been involved in the struggle to liberate South Africa I managed to escape from the apartheid regime in South Africa and spent a short time in Botswana before being smuggled out by friends to Zambia. I still cherish those memories and the friends who were so good to me.

During my last visit over the Xmas holidays I was interested in discussions with friends and reading previous press reports about the efforts of your government to establish the diamond centre in Gaborone and also the doubts and excuses by De Beers about the delay in the relocation of the centre from London to Botswana.

I salute the Botswana government for its foresight and urge you not to yield because I believe this is a sinister ploy to keep control over the wealth of the country. Botswana must think cleverly and learn from South Africa's mistakes and not fall into the clever traps laid out for it because you are dealing with the masters of the game.
