Basarwa wake up

The upgrading of the Mokubilo Kgotla to subordinate Tribal authority might be hailed by people as development and recognition to the people of Mokubilo who are predominantly of Basarwa origin.

However the way I see it, it is only a strategy to diffuse the controversy that has been tearing the village apart. That minority chieftainship and Basarwa chiefs in particular are not recognised in Botswana is an open secret and  written on the wall for anyone to see.
The BOPA report of 24 September discloses in detail the controversy that surrounds the Basarwa chieftainship. Mkubilo village has been experiencing conflict between the supporters of Kgosi Resetse who was unopposed in the chieftainship election of the village and the supporters of Kgosi Dijeng whose name was mysteriously submitted for consideration by the Minister of Local Government. Interestingly enough, though not elected by people, Dijeng was chosen as the chief of Mokubilo village.

BOPA goes on to say that the people of Mokubilo sought audience with the powers that be but their complaint fell on deaf ears. They went to appeal to Ditshwanelo for assistance. Eventually, seeing that the people of Mokubilo refuses to budge, the government upgraded the kgotla to a subordinate tribal authority to enable Kgosi Resetse to occupy the seat of a headman of record while Kgosi Dijeng was promoted to subordinate Tribal Authority.
