Are SADC govt's responding to the needs of their women citizens?

Johannesburg: The Gender and Media Southern Africa (GEMSA) Network would like to use this International Women's Day to recognise the efforts being made across SADC to achieve gender equality and gender justice but also to ask the question: are SADC governments responding to the needs of their women citizens?

There have been several notable achievements during the last two years in the gender struggle. These include:
l The SADC Heads of States (HOS) committing to a 50/50 representation of women at all levels of decision making by 2020 during the HOS Summit in Botswana in 2005.
l The election of the Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, an important achievement for Africa.

l The appointment of South African Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka and Zimbabwean Vice President Joyce Mujuru.
