Are land boards sleeping on the job?

Ievery village in Botswana, there is an outcry - the issue is the shortage of residential land. If you go through the land board files and check the waiting list for people who have applied for land, you will be shocked to learn that the list dates as far back as 1995.

You can apply for land and die waiting for a plot to be allocated to you. The question is, in our country with its population of less than 1.5 million, why is there a shortage of land or is somebody sleeping on the job at the land boards?

At times you will be told that the land is not serviced, the question is for how many years do we have to wait for land to be serviced? You cannot even get a straight answer on all these questions.   What are we supposed to do? Imagine as a university graduate you have the ambition to build your own house back home, to have a place where you can lay your head when visiting your parents. But you have to wait 15 years to be allocated a plot in your own home village. In the mean time what do you do, you get embroiled in debts financing city life - buying cars and expensive accessories because the money you have you cannot even erect a foundation for a two-and-a-half house because you do not have a plot.
