An open letter to the Police Commissioner

As an advocate of knowledge- based economy, I would like to applaud the commissioner of the Botswana Police service for the informative and well-thought out dramatisation of the various acts and processes of crime prevalent in Botswana.

This is a high order paradigm shift from the convectional arresting and charging of criminals to the robust imparting of public education on crime, in a prudent, vivid, entertaining but empowering formula.

This paradigm shift is inline with the progressive philosophy of globalisation and information technology, whereby the consumers of a public service or goods are not only availed the service but are comprehensively informed about the services rendered to them. By dramatising the various crime scenarios the Police Service is actual targeting the victims of crime but simultaneously exposing the criminals to the public. It is evident that many crimes materialise because of public ignorance and many criminal acts are repeatedly committed because the public is easily convinced by the criminals, while on the other hand the criminals are armed with witty information to convince their culprits and trick their victims. In most cases the people who are cheated are financial empowered and belong to the middle class strata. Are such people stupid? Definitely not.
