An open letter to His Excellency President Festus Mogae

I wish to draw to your attention a most disturbing feature that is occurring in our city, Gaborone. It seems that thieves have now openly taken over our city.

In the past two months, thieves attacked me. On no less than three occasions, two in broad daylight in front of many witnesses. The other attack happened at 10pm at BBS, along the main road leading to Phakalane, at the robots, when my car stalled, the thieves were armed with knives and in full view of motorists. I fought for my life, no one stopped to assist me. Fortunately, I had no money or Cellular Phone, so after beating me they casually strolled away.

Two weeks later at 3pm in front of Gilck Motors Garage in Broadhurst, two touts attacked and robbed me of my money, again they simply strolled away. At least 20 people witnessed this. When I enquired why I did not get help, they replied that these thieves have knives. Again another week later, at 1pm as I arrived at Motor Parts Centre, Broadhurst to purchase spares, two touts pounced on me and demanded money. They searched my car, after finding nothing they strolled away whilst I helplessly stood there.
Recently a friend arrived from Namibia, finding himself lost, he asked for directions and he was robbed of his glasses, Cellular Phone and money in broad daylight. He was coming here to relocate his business from that country. What message are we sending to investors?
