Tati Nikel's gambit or simplicity of math

Downsizing staff is always complicated and painful, both for employees and employer. On the one hand, every reduction jeopardises the well-being and security of workers and their families, on the other hand it brings a lot of stress for the management, distracting company's administrative and financial resources, the position of which is already likely to be critical.

According to the company's 2010 year-end report Tati Nickel produced about 15,000 tons of nickel concentrate in 2010, which was 25 percent below target. One of the main reasons for the remarkable fall in production is a continuing reduction of nickel content in the ore (from 0.25 percent in 2009 to 0.22 percent in 2010). The forecast nickel content will hardly reach 0.19 percent in 2011 resulting in higher capital and operating costs.

As such, Tati Nickel's current wage bill is uneconomical and unsustainable. Before the company launched their retrenchment programme the headcount stood at 1,073 people.
