Selling God to the highest bidder

While recent focus has been on revivalist-pentecostal foreign pastors and their deportations, the other side of the story is that citizen clerics are no better. The sons of the soil have formed a cabal to protect each other from the same crimes alleged against foreign pastors, writes Bishop ENOLE DITSHEKO of New Temple of the New Jerusalem

Foreign pastors take the flak and run the risk of being shipped out of Botswana for fraudulent practices. But the truth is that followers and members of the churches led by locals are constantly terrorised because ministers have formed cabals to protect each other on similar sins and crimes. Watching the political debate on Btv's Matlho-a-phage can be stimulating when panellists critique each other. But when granted a similar opportunity on Molemo-Wa-Kgang or The Eye, the men of God do a disservice to the nation by speaking in one voice on critical issues that continue to wreck other people's faith. Men of God have elected to mislead and misinform the nation about the endless noise and disputes within the body of Christ, for the simple reason that they know each other's follies and the safest way is to apportion blame to the membership, while they cut out images of 'holier than thou' and pious servants. Pastors praise fellow tyrants garbed in robes and white collars as instilling discipline among a wayward flock, just so they can avoid being criticised for their shortcomings.

When officiating at the ordination ceremony for Lutheran priests in 2009, Bishop Cosmos Moenga is quoted by Mmegi as steadfastly imploring his subordinates to be honest. "To be honest does not mean that you don't make mistakes.  As human beings, we make mistakes. But we must accept our mistakes and correct them for God to forgive us. If you are not honest, you won't be able to speak out, because you will be afraid that people will expose you," Moenga stated.
