Prescription for death

At the age of 40, Ms K has four children-two daughters and two sons-all living in a three-hut yard on the periphery of Tsebeyatonki village.

The fathers to the children have long since disappeared. So has her hope of any of the children turning into anything. Two are still in school and two have long since failed and given up. Of the latter two, only L has a job. Once in a while the daughters would fall pregnant and for this reason the population in Ms K's yard has been soaring over the years. L was expelled from school after he beat up a teacher, which he explained by saying the teacher beat him first, so he was only revenging. When he was called up to the headmaster's office he punched the headmaster in the face, which he explained by saying the headmaster called him "stupid". Before he was expelled, Ms K had been called to the school on too many an occasion to be updated on L's latest bad behaviour. The teachers were up to here with his ways, so no surprise when he was finally expelled.

L flees to Gaborone where he starts a tee shirt "company"; he buys plain tee shirts from a Chinese peddler in the street of Gabs and takes them to another fellow to have his name printed on the back of them then sells them in the streets. As far as Ms K - who herself has never been to Gabs-knows, her lovely son L is an entrepreneur who runs a little prosperous company that's doing so well and is saving the money for better use in the future. At least that's what he tells her every time she enquires as to why he sends her so little money and sometimes doesn't at all. What Ms K doesn't know is that her lovely first born actually makes a living mainly by conning people.
