Civil service strike and human rights

The Civil Service strike initially reported to last for 10 days has now entered its second month. Whilst the Society believed, and properly so, that this was a matter between the Employer (Government of Botswana) and Employees, the situation has now changed and requires in our view the involvement of all stakeholders in the nation.

*It is common cause that what begun and was touted as a peaceful and relatively short strike has in some instances turned violent. These riots have led to injury to persons, including minor children and destruction of property. This is indeed regrettable.

*The Law Society is however concerned that as all this transpires, there is an increasing tendency of erosion or disregard for Human Rights. The rights that the Society is especially concerned about are the so called second generation rights, these being, economic and social rights.
