At this time of mourning we still recall the good

We have learnt with shock and sadness about the sudden death of Bingu wa Mutharika.

Despite our differences with the way he handled his differences with the Malawian people, particularly how hard he responded to their dissenting voices, we still considered him an African statesman. No matter how we detested his approach, we still regarded him with respect as an African statesman and leader of the Malawian people constitutionally elected.

We are thus with the people of Malawi at these moments of mourning their son, father, brother and leader. It is yet another unfortunate loss of an African. It is at this time of mourning that as a country, Southern Community and the African continent we still recall the good that he did for the Malawian people, the region and the continent and Botswana is no exception. Leadership in the African continent though riddled with stories of misappropriation and mistrust still has lots of sacrifices attached and this cannot be divorced from any leader.
