When she was Minister of Communications, Science and Technology, Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi, trashed the idea of community radio stations because of MPs' concern that such a development had fuelled ethnicity in Rwanda. But the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) has licenced no less than 21 radio stations since 2002, five of which are community radio stations, writes *MORERI GABAKGORE

In the early 1990s, some Batswana tried without success to establish a community radio station in Gantsi.  World View, a company whose mandate was to provide assistance to educators for training purposes, was the main player in this project. 

According to the then Chairman of the board that directed activities of the project, Phagane Tladi, four Batswana of San extraction from New Xade were trained.  The project targeted the community of New Xade with the ultimate aim of providing a platform for the voiceless.
