Of slut-shaming and the economics of bo-me nice

A few weeks ago the Mmegi Monitor ran a front page news report with the headline: Wife by day, whore by night. Although it was catchy, I found it demeaning and sexist. Furthermore, apart from the informative aspect, the article followed the usual trail of vilifying prostitution and squaring blame on women folk.

This is seemingly the norm not only in mainstream media, but most quarters of society. As much as prostitution is illegal here, I still struggle to comprehend the way we self-righteously apply selective morality where women are concerned. It’s abhorring how as a society, we’re overly “concerned” with what people do with their vaginas, but don’t make the same hullabaloo about the shocking rape rate in this country, where monogamy is akin to a rare health condition – occurs in very few cases. Women should have free reign over their sexuality, as long as they know the consequences of their actions.

Habitual slut-shaming is boggling. Some men (and chauvinist women) feel at liberty to refer to women as ‘sluts’, ‘whores’ etc due to their chosen sexual liberalism. Those snide comments are rarely directed at men; not even those who have been ‘everywhere’, cheat or sleep around.
