Zim trader nabbed over alleged stolen car

FRANCISTOWN: A Zimbabwean businessman is in custody for being in possession of a car believed to have been stolen.

Ncube insists that he is the legitimate owner of the car.
"The vehicle is registered in my name. It can be easily confirmed across the border that the vehicle is mine. It is one in my business fleet of vehicles," he said in a Francistown magistrate's court.
Ncube produced documents in court that showed where he bought the car.
"I bought the vehicle in Pretoria and had it registered in Pretoria. I have requested the police to call my office or call the dealer where I bought the car, their phone number is there on the letterhead but they said I'm not allowed to use the phone," he said.
He further pleaded with the court to grant him bail.
"I will surrender my travel documents, I want to be out so I can continue with my business transactions in Pretoria.
This vehicle is not stolen," he insisted.
State Prosecutor Dimpho Mothibedi of Masunga police applied that the accused be remanded in custody.
"The accused person was arrested in transit and we have already communicated with the South Africans who confirmed that the vehicle was, indeed, stolen," he said. Mothibedi suggested mention for June 14 when the South African police will be available in this court.
Mothibedi said that the documents that the accused produced before court, as proof that the vehicle was his could not hold water because the numbers on the car and those on the documents did not match.  The accused was remanded and he will appear in court on June 14 before Chief Magistrate Kenneth Obeng.
