Zim man pleads guilty to arson

FRANCISTOWN: An unemployed arsonist from Zimbabwe who torched four mud huts at Mosetse in the Central District on January 11, 2013 has pleaded guilty. Before Principal Magistrate, Dumisani Bagopi, 30-year-old Nkosi Nkomo admitted culpability in four charges of arson yesterday.

The prosecutor, Inspector Oteng Selalame told the magistrate that investigations in the matter are complete. He applied for trial dates to be set and the further remand of Nkomo.The state allege that Nkomo set fire to a mud thatched hut belonging to Banyana Mbungwa on January 11, 2013 and in the process burnt property worth P2,480. In other charges he is said to have burnt mud huts belonging to Chandapiwa Mazwiduma worth P3,000, Siyephi Josiah (P1,850) and Onkemetse Ketsogetse (P900). The facts of the case will be read to the accused on May 30. Meanwhile, four former security guards appeared before Bagopi to answer a single charge of theft. The four, Mothusi Thapelo (36), Andrew Manyapedza (35), Jones David (31), Gaboeletse Bakang (29) and Bafentse Philemon (20) are alleged to have stolen six containers of diesel of 450 litres worth P53,096.73 at Engen Dumela Depot in Francistown in May last year. The accused had earlier told the court that they were no longer working and pleaded not guilty to the charge. Prosecutor Manson Kebiditswe told the court that he would serve the accused with statements tomorrow.
