A 37-year-old Zimbabwean man was caught red-handed by police on patrol while digging copper cables at Marang, Broadhurst, on Saturday night.

Broadhurst Solice station commander, Superintendent Obusitswe Lokae stated that the man’s two co-accused managed to escape the crime scene upon the police's arrival.

However, the police have launched investigations to locate the duo. According to Lokae, the trio had already excavated about 50 metres of copper cables underground when they were interrupted by the police. “On arrival of the police, two of his fellow co-accused escaped the crime scene and are still on the run,” he said. Lokae explained, “Copper cable theft remains a concern in my policing area, and most incidents usually occur at night when people are asleep. They dig and cut copper cables from the electric pole to the house.”
